Time is the one finite resource. We all have the same amount of it. No amount of money will buy you more. No one can take it away from you. It is only choices about how you spend it.
Try this Positively Dissatisfied approach to managing your calendar:
1. Start with a blank sheet of paper.
2. Down the left-side, make a list of what you need to spend time on for your health and happiness. Here's a hint: it should start with Sleep, Healthy Eating, Exercise, and Mental Health...then have other stuff.
3. Next to each item in the list, estimate the amount of time you need for each (Ex.: Sleep - 56 hrs [8 hrs/day])
4. Add a chaos factor. This is the amount of additional time that tends to get used (Ex.: Eating Health - 20 hrs [2.5 hrs/day + an additional few hours for when I get interrupted by my kids])
5. Check your list again...make sure the priorities match what you need to be happy and healthy.
6. On the right side of the paper, write "168" at the top.
7. Subtract each hrs total from your priority list AND subtract it from the number above. (Ex. 168 - 56 hrs of sleep = 112. 112 - 20 hrs for Eating Healthy = 92)
8. When your total hits ZERO, stop.
9. Everything remaining on your priority list. Stop doing.
